"Park Near Lu" by Paul Klee 1938
Mentioned in the same breath as Picasso and Mattise, the innovative and prolific Paul Klee was himself an artist of huge variety. His work encompassed many moods, but here we have a beautifully full, vibrant work that also achieves a balance - of form, colour and emotion. The park near Lucerne was where Klee visited his sick wife. He depicts black branches contrasting strongly with varying colours of foliage. This suggests we are looking at all seasons of the park at once, from death through to birth again. Life in all its intense variety.
